Objective

Setting expectations in the beginning of the lesson to allow the students to know what is expected from them in the classroom.

HCT teaching competences

Planning for learning (including knowledge and understanding of the content): This teaching competence is linked to my goal since I will be setting my expectations based on the lesson that I have planned.

Implementing and managing learning (including behavior management, language and delivery): This teaching competence is linked to the goal since the goal tributes to having a encouraging learning environment. 

Implemented strategies

Before implementing the strategies I had to introduce the word expectation to the students and make them understand why setting expectations are important.

• Writing instructions/expectations on the board.

• Asking the students about what is expected from them in a classroom and involving them in setting the expectations.

• Giving the students a goal/challenge when students meet the teachers’ expectations.

This book was very informative where it described how and when to set expectations and the importance of setting these expectations.  (Knoster, 2013

Reflection

This goal was effective in the beginning as the students were really excited about learning a new word, which was “expectation”. Applying the strategies and having the students involved in setting the expectations allowed them to be more engaged and cooperative during the lesson since they knew exactly what they had to do during each phase.

 Setting expectations is one of the foundations of having an effective classroom management since it allows the teacher to be in control. This goal could have been more effective if it has been applied in the beginning of the year or semester because setting new rules in the classroom at the middle of the semester is always critical, students need to get used to a specific routine and change is not the best option in a grade three ESL classroom.

Evidence

This is a feedback from my MCT (mentor college teacher) on one the lessons that she observed. The reason why I have set this goal is because of the feedback that she has giving me on the importance of setting expectations and having the students aware of what will be done in each lesson.

This is an example of how I have set my expectations, I wrote my expectations on the board and then explained to the students what they had to do in the lesson.

Another way that I have implemented this goal is by asking the students about what I expect from them and write the expectations on the board.
