HCT Teaching competence: 3. Implementing and Managing Learning

 

Implementing and managing learning is the competence and ability to manage students’ behavior and deliver the content to the students by demonstrating a range of effective teaching strategies and techniques such as drilling and questioning

 

Justification:

As a teacher it is important to have the ability to manage the students learning based on their different abilities and learning styles. It is also significant to be able to manage their behavior and be in control when teaching.

 

Implemented strategies:

  • Using questioning techniques to elicit understanding.

  • Having a range of strategies to motivate and encourage students to behave appropriately in class.

  • Scaffolding the students and meeting their needs.

  • Having a rules that students can follow to avoid misbehaving

  • Creating extended activities for the students to develop their four skills.  

 

Reflection:

I have developed my questioning techniques this semester since I had a comment in year 4, semester 1 about checking students’ understandings by asking appropriate questions. As a teacher it is important to make sure that they students have understood and often when asking the students if they have understood they would say “yes”, so as a teacher my job was to ask questions about the topic to really know if the students have understood.

 

This semester I have found no use of the reward system because as my MCT (Miss Julie) said “students shouldn’t be motivated to learn for a reward”. Now I understand that as a teacher my job is to motivate the students to learn and to behave properly by making them understand that life is not about rewards and punishment. I have used strategies in class that motivated the students to learn a simple example would be writing their names under their work and displaying their work.

 

One of the outstanding projects that I have done to support students was printing the sight words and practicing reading with the students that needed more scaffolding. This was an extra project that I have done where I sat with some of the students to develop their reading skills.
