HCT Teaching competence: 2. Planning for learning

Planning for learning is having a specific plan that will allow the students to develop in a certain area. Planning for learning allows the teacher to meet students’ unique needs and learning styles.

Justification:

It is significant to apply this teaching competence because it allows the teacher to be aware of everything that is happening inside and outside the class. When teachers are crucial in planning it makes the flow of the lesson predictable. Teachers should always be aware that planning is the best way to stay on the right tract when teaching.

Implemented strategies:

• Planning a weekly schedule with my MST to know when and what I will be teaching each week.

• Creating a weekly lesson plan

• Creating long detailed lesson plans for both my MST and MCT observations and keeping the lessons student centered.

• Creating a website with a colleague which includes activities that will enhance students learning.

Reflection:

Each week I have sat with my MST and discussed the lessons that she or I wanted to teach, that way both her and I were aware of what I will be doing each week. This allowed me to plan the lesson ahead of time and look for sequences in lessons as I was planning.

Creating a long detailed lesson plans for my observations allowed my MST and MCT visualize the lesson and know what to look at when I was teaching. The lesson plans clarified my thinking and the readers were able to navigate through my ideas. Choosing to have most of my lessons students centered was a way of thinking about each and every process of the lesson that really helped me grow as a teacher.

Creating a website with a colleague that was teaching in another school was very exciting, I was able to stay in touch with her via email as we were sending material back and forth for approval. Working collaboratively with a teacher that wasn’t teaching in the same school allowed me to develop my communication skills and build my confidence as a teacher. It is surprising how much teachers from different schools can achieve in a short period of time. The purpose of the website is to help the students practice some materials that are related to their curriculum and level of learning.

Evidence:

This was the third observation feedback from my MCT, her ongoing feedback about planning a lesson is the reason why I have improved in the past semester.
