This page includes the different strategies that I have implemented to develop my critical reflection skills.

HCT Teaching competence: 5. Critical reflection

Critical reflection: Having the ability to critically reflect and self critique my teaching. This helped me to improve as a teacher and develop my teaching my interpersonal skills.

Justification:

During my teaching practice I have continuously reflected on each and every lesson that I have taught. Reflection allowed me to develop my teaching skills and improved the flow of each lesson that I have taught. Critically reflecting is a way of asking for feedback from MST, MCT and peer observations.

Implemented strategies:
  • Reflecting on MST, MCT and peer observations.

  • Writing critical journals about a reflection on what happened in each lesson.

  • Setting different goals based on the feedback that has been given during the observations or any other lesson.

  • Critically reflecting on the PDP goals that have been implemented.

Reflection:

Reflecting on my MST and MCT observation feedback allowed me to go back to the lesson and think about the missteps that I have made while teaching. It helped me plan more efficiently and focus on the areas that I needed to develop. A great example would be when my MCT gave me a feedback about not smiling and being enthusiastic in the lesson; this is a part that I have never really thought about. This feedback allowed me to always be aware about my face expression and the energy that I was giving; I planned developing my interpersonal skills with my lessons. Writing a critical journal is a way of reflecting and being conscious about what went well and what didn’t go well, it helped me to grow as a teacher and think deeply.

A great example would be changing students’ seating arrangements because I noticed that I wasn’t able to move around the classroom comfortably to monitor, assess and evaluate students. I have established my PDP goal, which was developing my interpersonal skills due to critically reflecting. Reflecting on my PDP goals allowed me to change the strategies and use strategies that were more effective in the classroom.

Evidence

These screenshots were taken from my MCT’s observation feedback 1 and 3, it shows how I have developed throughout the teaching practice. This is an evidence that I was thinking and reflecting critically.
