HCT Teaching competence: 4. Monitoring and assessing learning

 

Monitoring and assessing learning learning is a significant aspect in teaching where the teacher develops students learning based on their different learning needs.

 

Justification:

As a teacher I have found out that assessing students learning allowed me to plan my lessons efficiently. All students were the learning outcomes in different ways. Having a variety of hands on activities in the classroom made the students more engaged and the teacher was able to assess students and understand their different needs through monitoring.

 

Implemented strategies:

  • Using formative assessment in the classroom. 

  • Using summative assessment.

  • Used different methods to check students understanding. For example Questioning the students in class and giving feedback

  • Monitoring students learning by going around the class.

Evidence:

I used formative assessment in the classroom since it was one of my PDP goals. The way that I have applied this strategy is by taking notes about each student’s progress. I first looked at the students’ diagnostic exam and then planned my lessons based on their different needs and levels. The most critical issue about this strategy is that its time consuming and requires concentration. As a teacher I had to constantly monitor and observe students learning development.

 

I have also sat with some of the students outside of class to develop their reading skills, I gave each student a set of sight words that they can practice with and self assessment. I met with these students to see how they have progressed each week.

 

I have marked students exams from the ministry of education and calculated the percentage of each class’s level. I have also monitored students during their exams and gave them instructions on how to answer the questions.

 

In class I had a lot of opportunities to assess students learning by asking them questions. Questioning allowed me to link the students’ answers to the learning outcomes and see if the students were able to meet my goals for the lesson.

 

I have constantly moved around the classroom to check students understanding and monitor their learning. Monitoring allowed me to know what each child was doing during the lesson and it improved my self-confidence since it made me realize that I am in control of each and every child’s learning.
